Therukoothu Manram is a traditional Therukoothu ensemble that has
carried forward its artistic journey across five generations. Through
changing times, the Manram has remained commited to preserving its rich
heritage and artistic traditions while continuing its long-standing
cultural journey.
For many years, the Manram has nurtured a vision of creating a dedicated
space to pass the tradition and knowledge of Therukoothu on to future
generations. An important step towards realising this vision is the
Therukoothu Training School, envisioned as a simple yet strong learning
platform for preserving and transmitting this living artistic
tradition.
With this vision, the Therukoothu Payirchi Palli was established in
Purisai in 2007. Since then, various training programmes, workshops and
artistic initiatives have been conducted to introduce and pass on the
art of Therukoothu to younger generations.
Through these initiatives, Therukoothu has reached diverse communities,
transcending boundaries of caste and language. We now seek to take this
effort to the next level by developing the school into a continuous and
structured learning space dedicated to Therukoothu.
The school offers full-time and part-time training in Therukoothu, along
with the traditional knowledge and practices associated with the art
form, including music, dance, physical movement, story telling, costume
and make-up.
The school aims to provide an open and accessible space where students
and art enthusiasts from both rural and urban communities can learn,
engage and explore the arts. Through this initiative, we hope to ensure
that Therukoothu remains not merely a memory of the past, but a living
and evolving art form that continues to engage with the present and
inspire future generations.
